Frequently Asked Questions
How far does it go?
A small water bottle (0.5 liters) of chalking fluid, lasts over 3 miles. Each liter will create about 6 miles of lines.
Is this graffiti?
We are working with community centers and city officials in New York City to use Contrail at city-sanctioned events. While we hope this breeds positive reception for Contrail, please be advised that graffiti laws change by municipality and users should be aware of local graffiti laws before use.
Does it go away?
Contrail is meant for use on asphalt. Our experience shows that the chalking fluid fades away in a few days (from rain or wearing), though results could be different on porous materials and dry areas with low traffic. If you're worried, before use, test on a small, inconspicuous area. Allow the Contrail chalking fluid to dry completely. Wash off to make sure the fluid does not stain surface.
We've formulated a sidewalk chalk fluid that rubs and washes away, is non-toxic, eco-friendly and still bright. Although we have a solution that works very well, we are always interested in your suggestions. If you have any thoughts about the marking fluid, please contact us at info@bikecontrail.com.
Can we use different fluids?
We recommend users only use our chalking fluid as others may stain, linger longer, be harmful to the environment or clog the Contrail device.
Does Contrail affect my braking time?
Any small amount of liquid on your wheel could affect your braking time, but our experience is that the chalking fluid is laid on so thin that it should not be a problem. Please test Contrail out in a safe space before taking it on any extended trips.
Will Contrail paint get all over my bike?
Contrail chalking fluid is added on right before the tire rolls on the ground to minimize liquid splatter. We've only experienced small splattering. We recommend wiping off any residue after riding with Contrail to minimize the risk of staining.
Will the Contrail device get clogged?
Through normal city riding, the Contrail device will not get clogged. If however, you take it off-roading or bike through a large pile of sawdust, this could clog the Contrail device. If the device should get clogged, you can you a 1/16" Allen wrench to take the housing apart, flush the system out and reattach.
How secure is the Contrail device?
The Contrail device attaches with a strip of strong velcro. In our experience, it stays on until manually removed. If you install it properly, and wrap the Velcro strongly over itself, it should stay on.
